Eight Tree Street is a contemporary floral design studio offering custom wedding flowers, silk flower bouquets and even elegant brooch bouquets. Maribel Kalata has an incredible eye for design. One event professional tells us, “her ability to be cutting-edge, chic and couture in her floral designs is unmatched.” She’s not afraid of using different mediums to create beautiful pieces of floral art!

But Maribel’s main inspiration is her couples. She uniquely tailors each arrangement according to the specific style of their wedding. She works with the top suppliers and can even obtain organic and locally grown flowers upon request.

Questions and Answers

What 3 words best describe your work?
Modern. Romantic. Contemporary.
Tell us about your company name.
Eight Tree Street comes from the place where I first fell in love with flowers—Philadelphia. While living and working there, I frequented the local flower market and started getting interested in floral design.
Why should someone hire you?
I work closely with couples to design flowers that tell the story of their wedding day; that help them celebrate and create an atmosphere of happiness. We offer a hands-on approach, from the design stages to picking out the flowers, to the final florals and delivery, all with an artisan, one-of-a-kind design for each wedding.
What are the common misconceptions about your services?
Since I have a home-based studio, most people think I cannot do many designs or provide the services that retailers do. But I go all the way to offer clients a complete service; plus, I focus on each wedding at a time so they know I give them undivided attention and put my heart into each wedding.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I worked in small cultural centers and museums, and my background was in putting promotional events together for them. Flowers and event design were a major part of that. As the years went on, I started designing and learning for these events.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
I love interior design. Anything from fabrics, to furniture, to textiles, and that has a big influence in the way I see color, texture and the way I design. I am so excited that weddings have broadened in their approach to include innovative designs and ideas we see in interior design today.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
I recently did a wedding in which I had no contact with the actual client—all was done through their wedding planner. It's nerve wracking not having the vision first-hand from the client, but I tried my best to match as closely as possible the tidbits of information I had. I was excited and almost in tears when I put the boutonniere on the groom and it matched perfectly! I had no clue or idea of what to expect, and when I saw it all come together it was such a thrill.
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
That moment when you see the new couple together as a married couple, and you see that first photo. You know the floral bouquet and the boutonniere you crafted will be preserved as a memory in photos.
What have weddings taught you?
That you always have to be prepared, something always happens. I usually make extra boutonnieres for example, you never know how many get lost or forgotten in the thrill of the wedding day. And I am also prepared for last minute requests, like a grandma corsage, or a small bouquet, things like that. Be prepared, things happen.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
In terms of flowers, to do something special for themselves. I always think of the bouquet as the complement to the wedding gown, so I say try to make it special, you'll see in photographs on your mantle for years to come.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
The power to multiply myself so I could do more than one wedding or event at a time. I love them so much and they are all so different and exciting.
What are 3 words that describe your personality?
Sensitive. Engaging. Caring.
What's your favorite book/movie/work of art?
I love movies, my favorite is Grosse Point Blank.
What's your favorite quote?
My daughter always says, "I love you to the moon and back." And I love it.
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Be flexible, marriage is about two people coming together, supporting each other and being flexible with each other.
Extracurricular activities:
Decorating, working in our backyard, sometimes doing a little DIY here and there.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
I would still be working in museums or art centers. I love being around creative people.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
A glass of wine and chatting with my friends.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any.
We have sweet rescued white cat we adore.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges?
Sometimes we love just a small neighborhood place. We go in and know we'll see faces we recognize. Or a coffee house that is more like a hang out place, Cervantes. It's a beautiful space as well.
