"I have never seen so beautiful pictures of myself. I think Liza just knows the right moment to take a picture. She loves what she does and you can see it in her pictures."

"She has a keen eye for the perfect moments!"

"I had never had professional pictures taken before and was definitely awkward and stiff, but Liza skillfully talked me into forgetting there was a camera and relaxing."

"Her style was perfect, sort of a photojournalistic/candid style, with of course a few formal shots mixed in. All beautiful and edited is such a perfect way."

"Liza was easy to talk to, she listened with true interest to our concerns and requests, and she was real about everything—never acted like a salesperson. Liza's customer service was more than that—it was personal."

"She had me put together lists of the important photographs to be taken, and spent time with us to understand the type of photographs we were looking for."

"She is very easy to work with and has a good sense of humor. My husband also really enjoyed working with her."

"There was not a moment when I had to worry about Liza and pictures. She was where needed when needed, but never on anybody's way. I trusted her completely and was very happy with results."

"She is very calm, friendly and excellent at what she does."

"Every part of the process with Liza was a breeze. It was like talking with an old friend."

What 3 words best describe your work?
Joyful, romantic, natural.
Tell us about your company name.
Juniper Spring Photography came about for several reasons. First, I was engaged, so I knew my last name was going to change soon and I didn't want to use that for my business. Besides, that's what everyone does, and I like to be a little different. Secondly, I wanted something that would evoke a natural, earthy, bohemian feel to stick in someone's mind and hopefully draw the attention of brides and grooms that can relate to that feel.
Why should someone hire you?
I won't ever say that everyone should hire me—I believe that there's a photographer for every couple, but everyone has a unique style, viewpoint, strength, etc. and you should seek out a photographer who clicks with what you're looking for. That said, you should hire me IF:
  • You love a documentary style of photography that doesn't involve set-up situations or directed moments.
  • You want someone that's laid back and easy to work with, who will be available and responsive to your needs and questions throughout the planning process.
  • You want someone who knows what they're doing, so you can just let them do their thing and focus on your wedding day.
  • You appreciate real, honest, emotional photographs that remind you of what you FELT when they were taken.
  • You appreciate a bit of the quirk in life ;)
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I started out studying visual art in college, and have always viewed the world in an artistic way. It wasn't until my boyfriend got me a DSLR, however, that I really realized how important documenting life is to me. I actually have a surprisingly poor memory, and so even in my own life, if I don't photograph it, I might not remember it. This gives me a passion for documenting the important will-never-happen-again moments in life. Some friends got married, I photographed their wedding, and realized that it's a perfect intersection of creativity and documentation, of beauty and meaning. I fell in love, and the rest was history.
What are the common misconceptions about your services?
A common misconception is that as soon as I raise my camera, people must duck or look directly into the lens. For a photojournalistic style, this tends to really cause unnecessary commotion and distracts from the moment I was actually trying to capture.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Find vendors you trust, that you get along with, and let them do their thing. That way you can be free to be present, soak it in, and celebrate. Plan your day around what means something to YOU, not because you saw it in a magazine and it's the new big thing. And if you can, hire a coordinator :0)
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
It's a toss up between having extra arms and being invisible.
What's your favorite book / movie / work of art?
Most things Dostoyevsky / Hair / too many to list.
What's your favorite quote?
Too many to pick an absolute favorite, but this one's up there:
"We can do no great things, only small things with great love" —Mother Theresa
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Have no expectations, only hopes.
Extracurricular activities:
Hiking, camping, biking, running (sensing a theme? ;) making art and kicking my husband's butt at board games.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
Art or social work. Or both.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Beer + boardgame + hubby.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any.
None yet, but I am just dying to get a dog. Or several.
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges?
Pretty much anything seafood.
